Financial education pilot for smallholder farmers in Kenya

Umati Capital contracted MSC to develop and deliver financial literacy training through digital media to the smallholder farmers in formal agri-value chains in Kenya. MSC worked alongside Arifu to develop the content and delivery methods. By the end of the pilot, one-third of the smallholder farmer members of Umati Capital had received training through the in-person and the SMS based financial education modules.

Digital and financial literacy for refugees and host communities in Tanzania

Alongside Arifu and Fundación Capital, MSC received a contract from UNCDF to develop and pilot-test financial literacy programs for refugees in the oldest refugee camp in Tanzania, Nyarugusu. UNCDF piloted a program on refugee financial inclusion, within which MSC developed and tested digital and financial literacy programs for refugees. The program is slated for scale-up between 2018 and 2019, within which over 30,000 refugees and hosts would access the content to enhance their financial capabilities.

Government-to-person (G2P) programs

MSC’s work with governments spans G2P infrastructure, as well as the design, test, and roll out of G2P programs. Key projects in this area include the development of a roadmap for the Government of Malawi to transition to digital G2P payments, and the PAHAL and Ujjwala LPG (cooking gas) programs in India. MSC’s interventions helped the Indian government to eliminate 33 million duplicate or “ghost” beneficiaries. MSC also provided critical inputs to Bantuan Pangan Non-Tunai (BPNT), the program for food subsidy transfer in Indonesia. The program reached 5 million beneficiaries in 2018 and will reach 10 million by 2019.

Boosting deposit mobilization, Tanzania

MSC helped Access Bank in Tanzania to boost its deposit mobilization. MSC’s intervention resulted in the bank being able to diversify its deposit base gradually. By the end of 2017, the bank had customer deposits of USD 87.4 million sourced from over 269,000 depositors across 15 branches.

Under this assignment, MSC developed a plan to help Proximity Finance, Myanmar transform into a financial institution that provides a comprehensive range of financial services. After transforming, Proximity Finance managed to achieve an outstanding gross loan portfolio of USD 15 million.
