Kim Kariuki is a Senior Manager and Practice Group Leader for the Banking and Financial Services practice in MSC Anglophone Africa. He works in Nairobi, Kenya. He is a specialist with more than 15 years of experience gained through projects with commercial banks, international funding agencies, and MFIs in Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Mozambique, and Zambia. His areas of expertise include project management, behavioral research, M&E, data analysis, sales, business development, relationship management, and microfinance. He specializes in product design, concept testing, prototyping, and pilot testing. He is also a certified PRINCE2 practitioner.

- Designed an entrepreneurship and employment strategy that targeted women across Africa, funded by Opportunity International (2023 - ongoing);
- Mapped Kenya’s financial institutions to identify opportunities to develop and scale insurance-linked products and services for MSMEs, funded by the International Finance Corporation (2023 - ongoing);
- Fitted alternative credit scoring models to support digital-based lending for a leading Ugandan financial institution, funded by Financial Sector Deepening Uganda (2023 - ongoing);
- Understood the barriers and drivers for low-income households and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in their access to indigenous and formal financial services in Kenya, Ghana, and Togo, funded by the Mastercard Foundation (2022 - ongoing);
- Unlocked access to productive credit for small-scale women entrepreneurs in Kenya, Uganda, and Senegal, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) (2022 - ongoing);
- Increased access, quality, and usage of digital financial services by open-air market and cross-border women traders in Kenya, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) (2022 - ongoing);
- Explored the effect of COVID-19 on the financial sector: An assessment of the impact of COVID-19 on financial institutions, funded by Financial Sector Deepening (FSD) Zambia (2020);
- Unearthed what matters to low-income consumers when designing the terms and conditions for financial products: A rapid market diagnostic activity, funded by FSD Uganda, which generated insights to inform regulations for digital financial services (2019);
- Assessed the effect of market-based interventions targeted at the financial sector: An evaluation of the impact of FSD Mozambique Program’s activities ahead of its closure (2019).
Before joining MSC, Kim was the Director of Integrated Projects at Dalberg Research, where he led the firm’s business development and partnership management efforts. He holds a Master’s in Agriculture and Rural Development from Kenya Methodist University in Nairobi, Kenya. He is fluent in English and Kiswahili.
